May 17th, 2008For a while now I have been talking about hooking up the Emotiv headset brain computer interface (http://emotiv.com/) to the Pyrocardium and this Thursday we managed to pull it off.
What you see in this video is me in a headset actively trying to turn on the fire with my mind. You can tell I am trying to turn on the fire by when I am holding out my hand. I find using a gesture generally helps me focus on a very precise thought. The thought to turn on fire in this case was to imagine the look and sound of the fire and “will” the fire into existence using psychic energy coming out of my forehead. I realize the part about the forehead energy sounds a little flaky but the neat thing is that it works quantitatively better.
To get to this point, I trained the system to recognize the thought pattern for setting things on fire with my mind. This was done using software Emotiv distributes to developers. I took the output of this software, interpreted it some, and then wrote to the USB controller board that runs the Pyrocardium. And then fire happened!
A few other people (Wanda, Kurt, Zack, and Bash) were also able to try the headset and make fire with there thoughts. They seemed pretty pleased with the results. : )
Also, in the video is Zack spraying color fire stuff into the flame to turn it red. Neato!
Oh, and big thanks to Bash who brought the headset, software, and laptop that allowed all this to happen.

Damn! So THAT’s what you guys are about! That is SO cool!
I actually came to this site because I found a t-shirt on the street that said “False Profit Labs”. I don’t advertise other people’s things and if I put something on that has words on it, it’ll say “The Power of 3″ (my band)…but for some reason (like the t-shirt was made well and–being an artist and musician myself–I was intrigued and curious about “better art through science” and who made these and what it all meant) I grabbed the shirt and washed it. My friends said it had something to do with Burning Man. I thought I’d find out for real.
So wow. You know, I’m convinced that, had we been guided and taught from a very young age (like birth) to utilize and develop our psychic abilities, we’d be using maybe, hmmm, like at least close to 20% of our minds instead of the 6% that most seem to exercise and that we’d be able to move “material” things by focus and intent. My boyfriend would laugh at me as I’d practice “willing” an item in the room to me. I’d say whatever it was called as I focused (and my b.f. would generally get up and hand the thing to me, much to my chagrin! I asked him to quit spoiling my exercises!) I’m also convinced that there’s a musical ‘formula’ that will ‘heal’ anything and I’m determined to find it! I’ve studied a bit about chakras and their colours and tones and I’d like to explore more. In The P.O.T. I write about love and magick and thinking for yourself, encouraging people to use their minds and believe in themselves. I’m really good at generating, shaping, and moving energy. My whole trip is to spread some love and peace around with the music. And that’s enough about me, I’m happy to have discovered YOU!
So I’m going to go explore FPL a bit more, I just had to stop in and say “hey”.
