So Long and Thanks for the Explosions

February 5th, 2011

False Profit Labs closes its rollup doors for the last time. Wah wah wah. No seriously, it’s a good thing. But before we peer into the great beyond, first a little art history. Since 2003, False Profit Labs has made ‘Better Art Through Science’: from exploding hydrogen to heartbeat controlled flame effects, multi-colored fire plumes and carbon fiber art.

False Profit Labs has exhibited interactive fire sculptures at Burning Man, NASA, Fire Arts Festival, Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival, and many other events around the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and beyond; receiving over 15 art grants from a wide range of commercial and non-commercial supporters. Our artistic focus has been interactivity and direct audience control of fire. Seemingly dangerous exploding things always fascinate, but we have strived to take that fascination to a deeper level, ‘From Wow To How.’

Many of us have ventured in new directions of art, engineering and commerce, including museum-quality pieces, special effects, new commercial ventures, and of course volunteer work.

Most of all, we would like to thank everyone for their support: the builders, donors, vendors, volunteers, crew, and everyone it takes to produce monumental sculptures that shoot fire with an audience. All those long nights in the shop sure paid off, and for us False Profit Labs has been an amazing opportunity to learn, grow and express ourselves. Thank you, and be well in art and life.
