Fire Arts Festival is like a mini Burning Man without all that playa dust. Come play with fire in what is literally a fire carnival, with installations by our good friends Interpretive Arson, Rebecca Anders, Michael Christian, Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito, Wally Glenn’s flaming sands, and way more amazing fire art in a newly expanded area 3x bigger than last year’s.

There will be a Life-Size Mousetrap, the fiery Boiler Bar, The Golden Mean Snail car, The Hand of Man crushing up cars, Alan Rorie’s Neuron Chamber, and on stage Dan Cantrell’s Rootabaga Opera, El Circo, Fire Arts Collective, and many other fiery acts.

Our own Carbon Garden continues its week-long debut after an incredible opening at Sand by the Ton.

At American Steel in Oakland this Saturday night Carbon Garden will fire up its carbon fiber flowers for the very first time. Dancing to the beat of False Profit and Symbiosis DJs: Tinker, Dr Toast, Welder, Heyoka, Beats Antique, Random Rab and Dov, our first 20 flowers on the stage will emanate tendrils, twists and outright blasts of fire with up to three foot flame tails each!

Carbon Garden will also appear at Fire Arts Festival in Oakland Wednesday through Saturday, July 15-18.

Carbon Garden is filled with mysterious flowering life forms–flowers up to ten feet tall with 3 foot blooms made entirely of space age carbon fiber. The Garden has four portals with a central patch facing east to catch the sunrise. Wandering through the garden, sensors detect your presence, process your motion and respond in tendrils and waves of fire with up to 30 three-foot flame tails. Swaddled in firelight and zen themed music, Carbon Garden is the perfect place for all life forms to seek respite and connect.

We’re fully underway with carbon fiber flower petal production.  In addition we’ll start bending and hammering steel stems in the forge pretty soon, and we’ve got decent mechanical designs for the interfaces to hold petals, leaves and stems together.  On the flame effect side, our Flame Elements now have built in ultrasonic rangefinders that auto shutoff if people get too close.  The garden is laid out  to allow good participant flow but prevent cars from driving in there.

Here are some renderings by Andy Lee showing how a simple petal shape can be repeated and attached at different points to create a wide variety of flowers.

Happy news! We received a grant from Burning Man this
year for Carbon Garden. The project is to build a garden of flowers
made out of carbon fiber (the same stuff as the stealth bomber,
Boeing’s most advanced airplane wings, and possibly your bicycle fork
if you’re extra cool).

Each flower will have a small flame that can change its size up to 30
times per second from a candle size to about 3 feet. Flowers react to
people around them with ultrasonic range finders, and “talk” to each
other in a language of fire.

False Profit Labs made its east coast debut at Boston Decompression on November 8th. Boston’s Decom was a 300 person party in a warehouse loft space that ran from 8pm till about 8am. The smaller size and indoor nature of the event along with the near impossibility of getting permission to run large scale fire at public events in Boston meant that we presented the LED version of Pyrocardium. The project was set in the main room of the party so we were able to get dancers with fast heartbeats to try it out and cause much high speed flashing. Some people would hang out long enough to calm their heart rates and watch the corresponding visuals slow down which they very much enjoyed. Overall, both the Pyrocardium and the party in general went off exceedingly well.

False Profit Labs will be Decompressing ourselves, figuratively, and Hydrogen literally, in the form of explosive bubbles. The Hydrogen Economy returns to the official Burning Man Decompression festival in San Francisco this Sunday. We’ll be running the bubbles from 7pm till midnight, but the party is all day long. Whether you want to argue about engineering vs science, government bailouts, or just want to pick up a t-shirt or sticker, we’ll be there for all your physical and meta-physical questions.

Ready. Set. Playa! False Profit Labs is putting the finishing touches on The Hydrogen Economy and PyroCardium then heading to Black Rock City. Our playa schedule in just a minute, but first a word about powder coating. It’s a process in which a pigment is applied electrostatically and then cured in an oven. We’ve powder coated just about all the steel in both projects and the results are truly beautiful. It’s also extremely durable, with an undercoat certified to 1000 hours in salt water. Hopefully that should hold back the alkalinity of playa dust in the desert.

At Burning Man you can catch The Hydrogen Economy and PyroCardium across from False Profit camp at 4:30 and Esplanade. Both projects will be operating nightly from 10pm until 2am, and until 4am the night of the burn. And if you like to dance, we’ll be throwing a party on Tuesday night.
